Golf Shafts in the News Graphite Design Shafts in Two US Tour Wins Kuchar and Langer carried the torch for Graphite Design by playing their shafts in drivers and fairway woods this past weekend. Kuchar played the Tour AD MD-6 and MD-7 in his driver and fairway wood, and Langer continued to play the Purple Ice 85 in his driver and Purple Ice 95 in his fairway wood. These are both stiff-tip shafts with low spin characteristics. The MD-6 is a 68 gram shaft and the Purple Ice 85 is an 86 gram shaft so you notice that different weight shafts work for different players depending upon their unique swing characteristics, feel and desired ball flight. Graphite Design, the most dominant shaft on the Japanese Tour, also had a first place finish in the Japan PGA Tour last weekend with their Tour AD EV shaft (Japanese model) and a prototype shaft made specifically for Hideto Tinihara. Kaymer Wins PGA Championship with FUBUKI Wood Shafts Making a statement with solid driving and fairway wood play, Martin Kaymer won his first major using the Fubuki 70 Alpha in his driver and Fubuki 73 Tour shafts in his fairway woods. The Mitsubishi Rayon FUBUKI (meaning "blizzard" in Japanese) comes in two models with different tip characteristics for higher or lower launch conditions to optimize distance. The very low torque and tight manufacturing tolerances of this shaft make it a great choice for those players seeking more distance while maintaining accuracy. Stricker Wins John Deere Classic with UST Mamiya The winner of the John Deer Classic used a number of shafts from UST Mamiya. His driver was a Titleist 909D3, 8.5 degree with a UST Mamiya Proforce V2 86-gram shaft. His 3 wood was a Titleist 906F2 3-wood, 13 degree with a UST Mamiya Proforce V2 96-gram shaft and his hybrid had the UST ProForce V2 Hybrid 104.
That cool blue shaft Jim Furyk was playing in his Callaway driver to win the Verizon Heritage was the OBAN Devotion 7, a 75 gram, stiff tip shaft. This is the second win for the OBAN Devotion shaft in 2010 and the 7th win for a Callaway Driver! D'Lance Golf can fit YOU in the right OBAN shaft for YOUR swing..whether it is the Devotion, Revenge or Tour Prototype. And just to remind us why we play golf the way we do, the second place finisher called a penalty on himself...the way golf is supposed to be played!!
Lighter Shafts hit the PGA Tour As a fitting concept, at D'Lance Golf Performance Center, we want you to play the lightest, longest, softest flexing shaft that you can control. We have even gone to the extent of putting our customers in 47 1/2" drivers with 45 gram shafts as long as we can lighten up the swing weight by using heads that have removeable weights like the Alpha V5LX, and TaylorMade R9 SuperTri or some of the older TaylorMade models. Well, in the search for even more distance, this phenomenon has hit the PGA tour. Tiger, who usually plays an 83 gram shaft, swithched to a lighter 75 gram shaft at The Masters. While this does not sound like much, the 10% lighter shaft weight can improve distance by helping generate higher club speeds. The longer shaft could, however, create more inconsistent contact so each golfer should make their own decision based upon the need for accuracy and control versus distance. Here is an article on the new, emerging light weight shafts done by Golfweek. If you want to get more distance and still maintain your accuracy, give us a call and we will dial you in!
